Hudswell Clarke D564

This locomotive is one of the oldest diesel locomotives to be built by Hudswell Clarke. It was one of a batch of 610mm gauge locomotives built for industrial use in the early 1930s. It began it's working life at Beswick's Limeworks in Buston in 1930. It was joined by three others including D558 which has also been preserved (at the Apedale Valley Light Railway).

D564 was equipped with a McLaren 3-cylinder diesel from new but this was replaced by a Dorman unit in the late 1950s. D564 is now stored on the Vale of Rheidol railway in Aberystwyth.

Hudswell Clarke D1012 / Cadbury No. 14

This locomotive was built by Hudswell Clarke for Cadbury in 1956, assigned to the company's factory in Moreton on the Wirral. The locomotive could haul up to 200 tons. It remained in service until 1977 and was preserved initially at the Llangollen Railway however it's working time on the railway was short.

In 2003 the locomotive was put on display at Cadbury World in Birmingham, later on at other food manufacturers including Premier Brands at Moreton. The locomotive has now been donated to the Gloucester Railway Carriage & Wagon Company with a view to returning the locomotive to working order.

Hudswell Clarke D1199

The Manchester Ship Canal Company maintained a huge railway network, which at it's peak contained over 370km of track and operated seventy-five locomotives. D1199 was one of those locomotives, built for the MSC Railway in 1960 by Hudswell Clarke. It was just one of a number of locomotives built for the MSC Railway by the company [1] and carried the number E1 (or MSC Engineers No. 1). Due to the tight radiuses of the track, typical of many an industrial railway, the locomotive had a small wheelbase.

The MSC network began to close down in the late 1960s and 1970s though the last operational section was not closed until 2009. E1 however entered preservation before that, first being preserved at Bury and in recent years at Peak Rail.
